We finally did it, and we got the check to prove it!! We captured that sought-after "first big win", well what we consider a big win that finally got that Tri-County monkey off our back. David and the team traveled to Tri-County Speedway Sunday for a $2,000 - 50 lap feature event. Finally, after several years of poor attempts, bad luck, etc. at Tri-County, David dominated the entire evening and ended the hot streak of 6 straight wins by Johnny Chastain. Tri-County is the track where David first began racing and where he picked up his first ever late model win.
With threatning skies overhead and a sprinkle or two, 30 or 31 cars filled the pits for the late model feature. David ironically drew a one and went out first for qualifying. On David's qualifying laps he held the car right against the wall for both of his laps. His first lap was a 14.84 with his second lap being better at 14.79 to put him ahead of the field. The team along with David had to agonize while every car went through time trials. The closest car to David after qualifying was Johnny Chastain with a 14.98.
For the feature it took three starts to get the race under green and at that time it was for only 1 lap. The inital start saw David take the lead out of turn two as two cars spun, Chastain jumped David a full car length on the second start and the two made contact in turn one giving the lead to the fourth place car only to see the caution come out for a spin. The third time was the charm because David along with the rest of the field made it one green lap. From that point on David stayed out front by about a car length with Chastain closing in on his bumper at times. David went on to the checkers for his second win of 2001 and the $2,000 paycheck.
